Wood or aluminum patio cover?
A wood cover looks good when it’s new. In the Phoenix sun it needs paint, roofing and new boards. How aluminum covers and alumi-lattice compare.

The trouble with wood
A wood patio cover in Phoenix needs repainting, re-roofing and replacement boards far more often than people expect. The top surfaces take the sun all day, and that’s where the paint goes first.
Solid aluminum covers
Aluminum doesn’t rot and never needs repainting. A solid aluminum cover gives full shade. We build them over patios, outdoor kitchens and pool decks; there are photos on the patio covers page.
Alumi-lattice
Alumi-lattice is an aluminum lattice cover. It gives filtered shade, like a wood pergola, for spots where you want light and air but less sun.
Choosing
- Full shade over a seating area or an outdoor kitchen: a solid cover.
- Filtered shade, or a lighter look against the house: lattice.
Either way, a well-made custom aluminum cover looks good for a long time without the upkeep. See more in our past work.
