Exterior remodeling in Glendale's older neighborhoods

The town incorporated in 1910, when about 1,000 people lived inside its limits. Catlin Court was laid out in house lots in the mid-1910s, and bungalows are still its most common style. In 1992 it became the first of Glendale's ten districts on the National Register of Historic Places. On a bungalow, the eaves, porch posts and gables usually need help before the walls do. Trim that old often carries many coats of paint already, and another scrape-and-paint only buys a few more summers.

Glendale's historic guidelines

Only part of Catlin Court, roughly Orangewood to Myrtle avenues between 58th and 59th avenues, carries the city's historic preservation overlay. There, city staff review minor exterior work through a Certificate of No Effect, and bigger projects can go before the Historic Preservation Commission, which has to weigh the Department of the Interior's rehabilitation standards.

For all of Glendale's historic neighborhoods, the city's guidelines ask for exterior materials and paint that fit the neighborhood, discourage bright or high-contrast color schemes, and encourage period-style trellises, gazebos and pergolas. We choose siding and trim colors with that in mind.

Newer Glendale homes

Away from the old core, jobs tend to be fascia with cracked paint, a wood patio cover past saving, or stucco that's due for painting. New soffit and fascia or an aluminum patio cover handles most of it. Look through past jobs for ideas.

Glendale questions

Does my Catlin Court house need city review for exterior work?

If it's in the part of Catlin Court with the historic preservation overlay, yes. Staff review minor work, and larger projects can go to the Historic Preservation Commission. Check with Glendale's Planning Division before you start.

What colors fit a Glendale historic neighborhood?

The city's guidelines favor colors that match the surrounding houses and discourage bright, high-contrast combinations. Bring your ideas to the estimate and we'll look at them against the street.
