Tempe dates its founding to 1871, when the settlement on the Salt River was known as Hayden's Ferry. It is now landlocked, at about 40 square miles with no open edge left to grow into. Two of its post-war neighborhoods, Borden Homes and Date Palm Manor, are historic districts on both the city's register and the National Register, and both are made up of ranch-style houses. Borden Homes is one of the earliest post-war neighborhoods in Tempe.

Wood at the roof edge and in the gables

Tempe's population roughly quadrupled between 1960 and 1980, so a lot of its houses date from those two decades. If the fascia and gable ends on yours are on their third or fourth coat of paint, covering them ends the cycle: aluminum over the fascia, vinyl under the eaves, and vinyl siding over wood gables. Closing the eaves also shuts the gaps around the rafters that lead birds to the attic vents.
