A town planned around the desert
K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington began selling land here in 1955, and homebuilding started in 1958. Architectural guidelines kept building off the mountainsides and asked development to fit the desert, and street names like Easy Street came out of a dinner party with friends. The Carefree Sundial went up in 1959, the town incorporated in 1984, and Black Mountain rises over both Carefree and Cave Creek.
Because houses have gone up here since 1958, a Carefree home can be one of the early ones or much newer, and the trim shows it. On an older one, check the wood at the roof line, the gables and any porch ceiling first.
Carefree exterior remodeling that blends in
Carefree gets noticeably more rain than Phoenix, so water works on the roof edge along with the sun. Wrapping the fascia in aluminum and closing the eaves with vinyl soffit puts that wood out of reach. The crew bends the aluminum on site, so an unusual roof line still gets fitted trim. A tile roof also needs roofing attention at the eave: drip cap first, then bird block in the gaps the tiles leave.
In a town built to blend in, color counts. If an association covers your street, read its color rules before choosing vinyl siding, trim or exterior paint. Patio covers in aluminum, solid or lattice, come in colors too, so the shade can match the house instead of standing out against the desert.

Carefree questions
Can you close in the eaves on an older Carefree home?
Yes. Vinyl soffit panels close the open eaves, and the fascia gets an aluminum cover cut and bent for that roof.
Do you work in both Carefree and Cave Creek?
Yes. Both towns are in our service area. The full list is on the service areas page.
