Exterior remodeling in Scottsdale, AZ
What exterior remodeling a Scottsdale house can have depends on where it sits: the city has historic ranch districts from the late 1950s and 1960s, and desert areas with their own color limits.

Scottsdale's historic districts and exterior remodeling
The Scottsdale Historic Register includes Village Grove 1-6 and Town and Country Scottsdale, both built between 1957 and 1960, and Villa Monterey, built through the 1960s. Exterior changes there are reviewed by city preservation staff or the Historic Preservation Commission, and each district has its own guidelines.
The Village Grove guidelines ask owners to keep the original block, wood siding and fascia and protect them with paint, not cover them with vinyl, aluminum or stucco. They also say a worn shingle roof should get shingles again, not tile. In a district like that, ask us about painting instead of siding or a fascia wrap.
Color limits in the desert overlay
Scottsdale's Environmentally Sensitive Lands overlay covers about 134 square miles of desert and mountain land, generally north and east of the Central Arizona Project canal. Its design standards rule out mirror-like or shiny materials and cap how bright exterior colors can be at a light reflective value of 35%. If your house is in the overlay, ask the city whether a new trim or wall color falls under that rule, and check your HOA's palette as well.
Everywhere else in Scottsdale
The city's own preservation guidelines name the usual materials on Scottsdale ranch houses: painted concrete block, wood siding and asphalt shingles. Outside the historic districts, covering that wood is an option. The usual list applies: covered fascia and enclosed eaves (soffit and fascia), vinyl siding over wood gables, an aluminum patio cover in place of a wood one, and bird block on tile roofs (roofing).

Scottsdale questions
Can I put vinyl siding on a house in Village Grove?
The district's guidelines say not to cover the original block or wood with vinyl, aluminum or stucco. Talk to Scottsdale's historic preservation staff before you plan any covering.
What does a light reflective value of 35% mean?
LRV measures how much light a color reflects, on a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white). A cap of 35 rules out light, bright colors in favor of tones that sit back into the desert.
